Failing is natural and Success should be too!

Before you want to jump in try to tell me that “I sound like I have lost it”, well do go through my earlier piece which talked about failure by design! In the mad race that we get ourselves into- for all the valid reasons that you and I may have, what we fundamentally tend to forget is how we got to the point where we are and why do we tend to stagnate after sometime at a point we are- whether that’s we here we rise and stay or whether it is a point where we come back to after rising and racing ahead- each of these aspects conveys one singular message- that message is about- failure being natural and success being something that we have to strive for! No one is urging you not to succeed, but the fact remains, unless you don’t fail safely enough and timely enough, you will never be able to gauge and arrive at the point which defines what success is meant for you! So here we go!

The story of human evolution has been a story of many failures and few successes, and for the reason who we are, we are naturally programmed to latch on to what works and do away with what doesn’t- well that is safe and fine until you reach a point of trying to “reinvent the wheel” and this is where problems begin to manifest! Walk into any bookshop or a library that you are allowed to visit, choose any subject area- what do you see, tons and tons of books written about success, how to get there, who got there, how did they get there, when and why- thats is what is – when you go back to history-m even within those books that speak or embrace success- very rarely do they talk in depth on the human aspect of failure that those individuals would have dealt with before touching success- whether they were great scientists, army strategists, innovators, creative souls- whatever they would have been- no where will you ever easily find the fragility of the human side to who they were written and documented in detail especially when it comes to moments of failure and distraught they faced. What this goes to do with our minds- is that we begin to believe on a few “captured” and “observed” instances of these success stories and as we try to extrapolate them to our contextual realities- we start to believe that we will be successful, because they were, altogether forgetting the individuality aspect of the person involved and the realities of their world when they walked the planet!

The observant human mind can get easily tricked, remember your school days when friends said they may get a B for the project work and land up with an A+ and you are left wondering what you failed to read! Well this is what keeps playing out through and around your life- whether it is your high school, college, work place, business, service unto society or just being plain yourself- the human mind simply cannot always capture what it observes holistically and is default to reinforce pleasure and delete pain (as long as it is not a threat to existence) and this is from where divergence begins and failure begins to become “the bad thing” and success anyhow begins to become “the only thing”!

As time has flown through civilizations, the reason why success has been given the crown and failure a back seat could have different reasons! These could be as simple- people around would not have been keen to know about the failing part, it would not have got recorded the way it should have been or simply for the fact (which is evident even today) that what ever mattered was “getting things done” whoever they came by! Sure enough, humanity has made great strides, but what this has led to is having the burden to lead and create pathways for human kinds progress on the shoulders of a few to dictate the lives of the many! Look around you, chances are that the society you live in is a chronicle of a few who have written the fate of the many within it and this is exactly what happens when people don’t give the time they should to learn from failures well enough by knowing the human story within!

Needless to say, we all are witness to the maxim, “Reaching the top, is easy, being there is the real essence of success”; what does this tell you, well, the plain truth that if success that isn’t as natural as what failure is, it always will be a struggle to hold onto it and a lot energy will simply get sapped up for being there! Let me explain, we have villages after villages at the foot hills of the Himalayas, having the formidable Sherpas living there- that is natural- they are acclimatized through the centuries to live and exits at altitude above 18,000 feet, but when they go climbing the great Himalayan peaks, which are basically a definition of “success” for the mountaineers, but for them are nothing else but a walk in their back yard- albeit a harsh one! So you see what is a great achievement- read as “success” for the mountaineer is a routine walk in the park for the Sherpa- that is what happens when success is not natural and this is why it becomes so difficult to retain it, even if you achieve it- simply because it isn’t natural!

Now, if you were to see the other stories of success, like the great works of art, creative expression through writing, building and innovating- these are the examples which are the real essence of success- but if you were to measure these by the myopic yardsticks that govern our lives today, all of these would seem to be nothing! Unless success too is natural and blends into who you are, you will always have to witness a never ending struggle to retain and manage it- whether it is the position you have at your workplace, whether it is getting your targets, whether it is completing a set of paintings- unless what you choose to do is not naturally aligned to who you are, you will always end up being limited as far as who you could have been and who eventually end up becoming! So is there something called natural success? A state of being successful sans being stressful or insecure of loosing it! Well read on!

Natural success, like failure, is silent, potent and lingers on- whether it is recognised or not and the individual who lives it- knows that well enough- irrespective of what others perceive about it! Have you ever heard about a surgeon who threw party after every successful surgeon? Have you ever heard about a Teacher- who got depressed when few students didn’t achieve the grades- well probable not! The reason for this is that both the surgeon and teacher know very well that essence of natural and real success resides in the simple space of doing what is being undertaken to the best of ones’ ability and knowing that people will continue to perceive to the best of their abilities to perceive and nothing clouds reality like perceptions do! The surgeon or the teacher doesn’t have to take an effort to save every life or send every kid to The White House (all though they may like it that way!); all that they need to stay glued upon is the fact that, they are deploying their skill to the best of what they can and hence they remain unflustered, calm and composed not being insecure or worried about their “success”quotient”!

The modern day narrative and definition has taken the whole essence of success and everything that goes along with it to a very limited and time sensitive space- the yardsticks, metrics to measure also go on to ensure that there is always a hunger for more and more with no real meaningful end in sight and this makes even what has been achieved meaningless in the future! The only people who are immune and are able to stay safe from this maddening and unwise spatial orientation are those who are able to define and calibrate their stories of success and failures built on the bedrock of their own intrinsic attributes and on the individuality that they bring along!

It is these rare eclectic species of humans in the nooks and corners of the society who go on to define the essence and meaningfulness of real success- the natural way and this is why when you visit that art gallery, that fine-dine heaven or read through those well written stories- you feel elevated- because each of those creative expressions arise from the inner solitudes of who these people are and with every story they weave, they are able to shed a bit of themselves into every bit of what it is! If you thought this is limited only to creative people-well humans are creative in what they choose to do, scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers, writers, you think of it and each one of them is- the only catch being each one of them can deploy or will deploy their individuality and intrinsic essence to a limited extent for different reasons and this what goes on to differentiate the ordinary form the extra-ordinary and some stories fade away in months and few linger on for centuries as personification of success- the natural way!

I leave you here with thoughts, urging you to connect with your essence of meaningful success which is measured not on the yardsticks given around to you, but rather on the yardsticks that you think they ought to be measured upon- only when you do that- you will be comfortable being successful and will you be able to enjoy the success the way you are meant to!

Ciao for now, will be back soon with another piece soon! Until then stay wise and stay successful!

Designed to Fail.

As surprising it may seem, the fact is that all of us, each one of us are designed to fail and fail as spectacularly and proportionally as our success is and this is one thing that doesn’t change, whether you like it or not, it is only the ability to change and translate that failure into something meaningful is what can ensure that you retain your sanity and keep moving ahead! Join me here as we try to decipher the why and what that makes us designed to fail and how all of that plays out and if there’s anything that can we do, to make all of those unfolding events to play out to our advantage!

When we see the world around us, what you see is that every product, every service and every aspect that touches our lives comes in with an intrinsic notification of failure! In case of some products (and what you can perhaps easily relate to) will the Expiry Date on the product- it does not mean that the product dies- rather what it implies is the fact that beyond that date- the product will not be able to function as it should and deliver the promise what it holds- that is – it has commenced to fail to it’s own standards of efficacy and value! If you thought this is limited to only food products, medicines or things that we consume, think again! Heard about accidents owing to mechanical fatigue/ mechanical failures, engine failures so on and so forth, accidental fires because of fail-safe mechanisms failing! Well, the whole universe around us is sprinkled with cases of accidents, disasters and what not, each of them having the same underlying reason- the instance when the accident or the disaster unfolds it the moment when the design fails or rather the failure of design begins to manifest!

You see every object that has been ever created has been forged by crafting multiple elements to make them what they are so that they can work and provide the service that they are supposed to- in fact almost every machine that we use, whether its the laptop on which you are reading this, your car, that plane you fly or the humble pen that you use to write your memoirs, each of them come with a service manual- some have written elaborate technical literature- which can be out rightly spooky requiring a qualified and technically competent person to decipher the language and apply method to that madness and yet at other times a generous use of common sense can help resolve and arrest developing failures! Consider this, you have that Cessna Aircraft as part of your private aircraft fleet and it comes with an elaborate maintenance manual and even if you would not be perhaps more knowledgeable about the aircraft of the need and urgency of a timely maintenance of the equipment, each time you reach out to a pilot to fly you out of that place and get you back, the first question and the first document that the pilot will be requesting you is going to be it’s maintenance records! Not because the pilot is an aeronautical engineer, but simply because, glancing through the records the pilot knows which parameter needs to be watched over which other- which is perhaps more likely to fail than the other and that’s what helps to take split second decisions, if the shit indeed hits the roof! There are innumerable such examples strewn all around us all the time and when those fabled accidents do strike, more often than not it has an element of one component that did not work the way it is designed to- be it the Human or the Machine! So now the big question- Why do things and people fail? What is failure?

Everything and Everyone by the virtue of their construct is designed to fail; just as all of us who are born, eventually end up being dead one fine day! Some fail early, some delay that, and it all boils down to a singular facet of how well does one manage and work over their failures to move from one to the next- this inversion of failure is often also referred as success in the world and how frequently and how well one is able to carry out this inversion is what sets apart a few from the others! Now if this is what failure is really all about, why do people fail? You see, failing and bouncing back is a very natural process (although it doesn’t seem so, because we have ended up planting negative social dogmas and references around it) and the reasons why things or people fail are broadly one of the two- There could be Intrinsic reasons- that is things and people fail because who they are and how they are or Extrinsic reasons- the context in which people and things are put into or operated within which ensures that they fail each time as they try to perform! This is something akin to stepping on the accelerator pedal with the hand brakes on! You may say now, so can we do something around this or are we just fated to fail?

We may be fated to fail owing to one of the attributes and depending on which one is more or less of the two adjustments on those fronts can ensure that you are able to incrementally nudge the contexts in your favour and that simple effort is more often than not enough to ensure that you move ahead and din’t remain stuck or get dragged back! Once individuals are able to determine what is contributing to their failure and what type of failure they are experiencing, it’s just a matter of time that adjustments can be done and executed to change the tide and turn failures inside out into success! So how do we go about this and if this is so simple, then why isn’t everyone successful using this technique?

Well, the trick to turn failure into success relies on two fundamental things; firstly the ability to know yourself- what is that you are or the thing that you are dealing with is and second is consistency. It is only when purpose and consistency meet that magic happens, because purpose keeps people and things moving ahead in the direction to achieve a set goal or reach a set destination and every time there is an obstacle or a hurdle in that process (read failure), the consistent approach to decipher the causes, correct them and keep moving on is the only way and perhaps the simplest approaches to take! Why is not everyone able to do this then, well, patience is perhaps the most rare of all virtues that we come across and without the sprinkling of patience around, consistency does not stand a chance!

Before I leave you on this piece, a few final words- Believe it or not the compelling fact of life is that we are all designed to fail and everything that humanity has every forged will also fail at a point in time- the only question is whether that will be an intrinsic failure or an extrinsic one and that goes on to determine the timing of that failure! This is the crux and this is what paradoxically empowers an individual to take a path to fail fast, forward and walk ahead or plan and delay that failure, either ways aligning themselves for an early or late success story!

I wanted to keep this piece intentionally a short and breezy one, so that you can have more time at hand, thinking and contemplating about the failures that you have experienced and how that unfolded then and were you able to turn that failure inside out to be a success story or was it something altogether different that walked into your life from that moment on and was that “success”?

Ciao for now, will be back soon with another one! Until then Stay Safe and Stay Wise!

Time your failure.

For anyone who has ever done anything worthwhile in their life, they would know the value of success and more than that they will importantly know the value of timing their failure! Yes, believe it or not more than timing of success (which is certainly important) it is of paramount importance how one times their failure, time it too soon and you may loose on some benefit and time it too loose, you end up missing the opportunity completely! Join me here we explore this space and try to unravel what makes timing failure so important and whats the real way to go about it!

Success stories, almost always start with the statement “I or We saw an opportunity” rarely do we see a success story openly stated as “I or We failed at “X” so we planned and that’s how the success story of “Y” came to life!” You may say, well why does it matter what “X” was and if the whole world is celebrating the “Y” shouldn’t we all do the same, well sure enough we can celebrate “Y” but if we ignore “Y” and fail to understand what happened in that space, be rest assured the transformation of Y to X is just a matter of time- When and not If! It is within these hidden away, intentionally or unintentionally forgotten spaces of “X” that lie the real secret of understanding and embracing failure well so that whatever next steps one chooses to take from thereon, they end up being essentially rewarding success stories that “Y” is! So what is it about timing of “X” or rather timing of one’s failure? How does that become a factor to determine the scope and success of “Y”? Read on!

To answer the question about the timing of failure, one must understand , what is failure and how is that different to success? Can at times Failure be really Success disguised in the moment? Let me explain! Consider this, you are a business tycoon with a few millions of change to spare and of the many real estate projects that your firm is working one odd project which represents .0005% of your revenue and perhaps .00025% of your business profit has gone bust- so what does that mean to you- may be nothing right- you may not even notice it unless it comes up in the mentions of the annual review meeting or something like that, but now, if that’s the only project you had and the only one thing to showcase as your business endeavor to the world- now what is unfolding? Almost staring into the darkness which threatens to wipe off your very existence of the business horizon ins’t it! So the first thing to take note is that the frame of failure is very important- if you use the right frame, you can really see if what is unfolding is indeed failure or perhaps just a small bump on the road that you tread upon and this first observation is vital to arrive at the next critical one- the one that helps you decipher timing- knowing when enough is just enough and when you need to stand down, step back or just stand still or perhaps take that crucial detour- simply because the way ahead is simply self-consuming and detrimental!

If you carefully observe stories that spelt success owing to a failure- it almost always is the case of the crucial timing of that failure! We have all heard about how larger businesses have acquired some business that was been offered at dirt cheap rate simply because the founders could not sustain it and how over time that business ended up saving the larger one and ended up being the identity of the business itself! This is the space where failing at the right time becomes crucial- you see, even for the original founders of a business for being able to walk away and actually earn something of a failing business (at that moment in time) is much of an achievement and that ability to have that kind of a risk appetite to dive into the unknown at that time is what creates a contextual difference about how the big business is changing its approach and attitude in the business landscape and thereby creates enough buzz and ripples to not only revive the failing business but if the conditions are right, empower it and turn that failing story into a shining success beacon! This all but can happen only if the failing business and the one that can identify and pick it up arrive in the frame of context at the right time! If the timing is wronged by even a few quarters, more often than not, it ends up scripts of fallen businesses and missed opportunities!

There is one more essence to this game of timing and that is of being the right size, you see when failures happen at the right time and the right size, they stand a chance of being picked up, course corrected and give another lease of life, either by the same people or by a different group of people! We have these examples all around us, know that airline which has been struggling and seeking buyers or investors, well why isn’t it being rescues, for the simple reason that the size of failure, you see when it comes to business like it comes to even helping on a personal level- you would never go beyond your set boundaries and the moment you think that even offering the help that wish to is going to tie you down or hamper your peace and safety- intellectually and financially- needless to stay you are going to step back and stand down unless you are helped by few more friends who can collaborate and together then perhaps you can tame the odd colossal failure- again provided the benefits of the turnaround are in line with what every partner is expecting! If that doesn’t fit the bill, then you have people backing off in the middle of the things and trust me that’s one things you never want to happen- that is like pushing a car downhill with no one at the wheels to control the jump start!

Whether we like it or not, whether it be business or the personal equations that we have amongst us, unless we have stories of failures around us subsequent stories of stellar success would be all but lost and even the few original success stories would loose their appeal, because failures of all kinds- whether or not dealt with provide a stark contrast to human society and this alone perhaps is what keep humanity anchored to certain set of values and principles! It is when the cost and benefit of failures are played out in societies in the open that people tend to become more understanding responsible and attentive to whats unfolding around them, for whether you are aware or not and believe it or not, someone else’s failure can mean your success pivot and even the converse s true!

So as you journey along, as you plan for milestones of success and celebrations, do also try to calibrate your failures that may come your way on the way- for if you get it right and know the right failure to arrive at, you may end up scripting perhaps the greatest come back stories or perhaps be the reason for something new altogether to begin! Who knows! There is no real reason to fear failure, rather it is only when you embrace failure that you are able to liberate yourself off the ignorance and arrogance associated with it and that in itself becomes a key to your future foundation whether you want to just perhaps want to get a job or sell popcorn or build the next business empire!

So I leave you with thoughts here, urging you to perhaps plan your failure, so that your success is even more brilliant and dazzling! Whatever you do, time it well and size it apt! Every Success Story has been built on the Souls of some failure- at times these souls are known and more often than not they remain unknown! As someone said, Failure is not Final and Success is not eternal!

Ciao for now, will be back soon with another one soon! Until then stay safe and stay wise!

Fail before you Lead.

Irrespective about what ideas you have about success, being the victor and about leading yourself and others, the singular fact remains that, unless you fail, you will never be able to lead- neither yourself and nor anyone else! Failure, ironically teaches more than success can ever and this is the essence of this short piece! Join me here as we explore, what makes Failure so intense and educating while success reached without it, just seems to fizzle away unless it has been forged on the robust foundation of failure from where one can rise above! This is the space where learning from failing and failing forward (as someone has said this) matters! So let’s roll!

If you pick leaders across the spectrum of politics, business, community service, the corporate world- one singularity will come back hitting you hard and that is the fact that the most revered and successful ones’ have been the ones’ who have either been spectacular at failing or have kept failing predictably and yet achieving what they had set out for! But aren’t people supposed to be crushed and finished by failure, we have corporations and business go bust and never rise back again, we have examples of political careers wiped away and business vaporized owing to leadership failures- what about that bit? Well, sure enough even the other space exists and this is what makes failure so interesting! Failure rewards only as long as you learn from it or when you learn when enough is enough! You disobey either of the two rational scenario, try stretching your luck a bit too far and you are history in the works and sure enough not for the right reasons! So let’s understand why and when failure gets fatal!

We have heard fables about politicians, who went on and on loosing one election after the another, we have heard about that self-driven, eccentric business boss who went on and on with his rant and obsession to do what he deemed right, we have come across those proverbial managers (damagers) who went on and on to spell check you mail and insist what you say, write and do (something that would even put your family to shame!)- when you eventually look back and analyse what has happened to most of them- well in all probability they have either hit their trim level of incompetence and settled down in their little pond and called it “The Pacific Ocean” or in few cases have managed to have themselves completely erased away- as in physically from the realm of the planet! So you may ask, if failing is going to lead to success, why don’t these scenarios qualify for that? Well, the reason for that is, as I said earlier, one needs to know when to stop and when “enough is enough”! like everything else, failure too gives you a fair chance to bounce back and re-align your life, but failure gets brutal and fatal once you stop learning from it and keep doing the same things again and again expecting different outcomes!

It is only when people begin to embrace failure- from the context of being able to learn, improvise and realign themselves that things begin to change and that change comes from within you! The first things that meaningful failure does to you, is that it will change your context and approach to the things that you are failing at (as long as you are ready to learn and work over it). All great leaders, that the world knows today have been baptized by failure first and it’s only when that baptism has liberated them to seek more clarity, touch gratitude and realize their trim levels in the honesty of it, that they have been able to change to create the success stories that we all get to witness today! So how do few people manage to learn from failures, while most withdraw and stagnate themselves- shelving away all their aspirations by giving themselves the permanent credentials of a certified failure?

People who emerge as Leaders, post failures and setbacks have a few things in common. To begin with they have a clear purpose and they want that to be achieved and are ready to receive the accolades and brickbats on that journey even as they begin to walk it! This mental resilience and conditioning to embrace things as they come, evaluate if they serve the required purpose or not, check if they create value or not and keep going is what makes these people formidable learners, adapters and artists in the way they deal with challenges thrown at them and even as the world gasps in abated breath for the news of their impeding doom, they almost always bounce back and come out as not only a survivor but also as a victor! Importantly people who learn from failures know when enough is enough and are absolutely clear about their trim levels!

Think about this, why do you think that not all great businesses are able to be the same spot – all at number 1? Why are even great businesses trimmed at some levels and numbers in the leader board- even though they are successful & progressive- this is because their leaders and the people who lead and direct have held on to the purpose and clarity of what they do and why they do, what they do and more importantly have resisted all temptations to avoid getting into doing something either what they don’t understand or don’t concur with! The first thing that failure teaches you is the zone that you belong to- you see, whether you are an individual or a collection of individuals (that is what a firm is), as long as you learn from failure what your real competence is and where the trim line for that competence is- you will be great because then you know the top line and you then just have to focus on improving within and that’s really easy once you have the right people to help you with that! Let me explain!

Say you want to build house on a plot that you have, well wise people will assess the context of the plot, know the purpose of the house (the utility aspect) and then decide how to design and build that beautiful structure knowing the limitation of resources at hand (people, technology, skill, competence, time and money). So gauging this, you will probably settle for a state-of-the-art, beautiful, one or two floor building that meets your need within the parameters that you can work in. This is what calibrated success looks like( sure enough you don’t necessarily have to fail first here because you have analysed well to start!). Now, instead of this, if you were to just go on building floor upon floor, not knowing when to stop and why you are building that thing to begin with- well the inevitable will happen- either you will break financially to continue building that never ending structure or the structure will collapse on accord of the sane principles of physics and gravity!

Even as many leaders fail, very few learn from it and even fewer apply those learnings to their today to create a more valuable tomorrow! This is what differentiates between Good and Great Leaders! Good Leaders will help you navigate your today, for that serves their today as well- This is the stuff that you come across successful managers in the corporate world and those content small businesses who are happy earning the same annual amount even if the inflation has changed and cut their profits by half! What great leaders do differently is that they not only apply the learnings of their failure to their work and create awesomeness at work, but they are at the same time, consistently failing forward at something else- experimenting with new ways, processes or even new businesses and even these failures present valuable lessons which go back to create more value to the functioning business to make it better and should the other experiments click- which they will- needless to say you are just witnessing the birth of a conglomerate and this is how business empires are built- by sharing the knowledge of failures across the board and applying those valuable lessons across to create value and control in a more meaningful manner!

On a more human level, failure brings in humility and sanity, it teaches you to embrace and learn from everything around you and also presents you with absolute clarity about what matters, and what doesn’t and makes a real shortlist of valuable resources- people or otherwise! Not all failures are owing to a person or a collective of people running a business at times, it also could be circumstantial and beyond human control, but again in even those scenarios, the ability to learn, analyze and apply those learnings back to the business as the group hits the re-start button is what creates the difference- the difference in terms of chosen trajectory, speed, expanse and the choice of people for the new journey! It is only when the limits of competence, skills and contexts are properly calibrated post a failure and applied to the purpose on hand that magic is created and progress is made on the chosen path!

Final words, as they say, “Failure is never fatal and Success is never final”, that may be true but for that to manifest this frame of being able to consistently learn from failures, embrace them and seek them is what is vital to create the shift from being Good to being Awesome! Failure does’t finish one, it’s the inability to learn from failures and apply those learnings to life and business, is what makes failure dangerously fatalistic!

I leave you here with these thoughts, will be back soon with another one, until then stay safe and stay wise! Ciao for now!

Redefine failure to succeed.

You failed at something? Great! Failed at it again? Awesome! Still at it and going to try one more time? Splendid! Well, if you think, I am out of my mind, this is what the life of a crazy innovator, scientist or explorer looks like and if you ever wondered from where does humanity get it’s answers to complex and new challenges that keep popping up- it is this space of learning from failures by redefining as them as they happen! Join me here as we explore what failure really is, why it is good and why failure alone can prepare you for success and when it does that- why that success almost always is enduring and self-sustaining!

The next time you get a chance to visit a library, I urge you to go to a section that tells you stories between the 1800’s and until 1970’s! That is the period where all the magic that we see around today happened- sure enough we did not have the computers than in the way we have, neither did we have the internet nor the so-called smart phones- but what was built during that period in the history of mankind across the continents- remains to be the foundation that has made everything else to stand up eventually! This is also the period that was marked by intense and successive failures, one after the other, day in and day out only to eventually allow someone to keep working on the earlier omissions to come up with the required adjustments to get the answers that were been sought and thereby touch success and create something that would open up a new world altogether! If you ever wondered why few nations are more technologically advanced than some others, the reason again lies in the study of those 170 odd years, the nations which have struggled, failed, got beaten, broken and have risen up are the ones’ who today lead the world and that is perhaps the biggest visible lesson in front of us to understand that Failure does not and it never has limited or stalled success, rather it is the one that has forced humanity out of their comfort zone to search further, look beyond and reach for something new, establish the new normal’s of life almost every 20 years- all of this- we owe to the the bygone failures- its is on those foundations that we have got all of our today built! So why is failure so intense? Why does it get so deep inside and sting so bad? Why do we shy away now, from failure if it is what it is- a motivator in disguise? Well, read on!

The human brain is perhaps the most awesome machine that we have ever come across, even after thousands of years of evolution, every other moment it tends to keep throwing up surprises and we are all but compelled to say, “Well I didn’t know this about you!” Through our evolution, our brains have had to be hard wired for tough conditions, before we established permanent settlements and cradles of civilization. In those formative stages of humanity, failure was equal to death. you see, you went ton hunt a wild boar, the chances would be if you missed the boar, you would be back with some serious injuries (with no remedy at that time) spelling slow and sure death! Likewise if you were a farmer, watching out for pests, and keeping a check meant ensuring food to survive and failure on that bit meant seriously bad news! So this from where the story of why “failure is fatal” became so hard coded and even as humanity started to thrive and prosper the new age sins of gluttony, greed and all their cousins, embedded a sick idea into some person’s mind, “If I don’t do “XYZ” , I fail and If I fail, I am finished”, well sure enough that kind of statement makes sense as long as you are one of those troopers, law enforcement agents, critical member of the society, saving lives and keeping community safe, you don’t hear about a bank teller shooting themselves in their foot , because they misplaced the 50 cent coin right! This is the reason why that wrong notion of “failure is bad” , “failure is the end” and “failure is fatal” got stuck like an unwanted excess postage stamp on the dashboards of our mind and every time we go out to do something, we end up unnecessarily putting ourselves into more scrutiny than what is required, sure enough there are some vocations where one must never throw caution to the wind- you, see you always want your co-pilot doing the checks even as you command the plane, but that’s about it, what you need to know to begin with is that, if there is something really that important, it will come in with its own set of checks and balances either in human form or through the interface of technology that we use and if that doesn’t happen, there are only two inferences, wither what you do- is not important or you have just set yourself up for the greatest learning of your life through failure- for failure is always a step closer to you than success! So what next, how do we know when to keep going and when to stop and choose a different path? Sure enough you don’t want someone to be martyred at the alter of failure pursuing success- it was fashionable back then in the olden times, now a days that’s called being stupid!

The best part is that, like with everything else, failure starts and ends with you- your thinking and your approach, change any of these one variables and you will either alter the type of failure experience or you will hit the jack pot and touch success right away! Let me explain! If you study the life of inventors, scientists and innovators, the singular aspect that you will come across is that they relied on some founding principles of science and observation and persisted until they perfected what should manifest as an outcome to support what science told them in theory! They changed processes, steps, catalysts, ingredients, conditions of the experiment and everything that could have, except the pursuit of the finality of the experiment. Sure enough many scientists ended up inventing, discovering something else alongside what they were pursuing , that became a double cherry in many a case! When it comes to other creative facets likes, arts, literature, visual arts, etc, we all know how many times a writer would have trashed away a copy, a few pages at times the whole book! So what is getting played here? You would heard about why a painter just tore down a brilliant piece- this is the space wherein the finality doesn’t come to live with the imagery that the creator has in mind! This perhaps is the finest point of human exuberance and excellence in terms of pursuing an abstract value to be called successful! I mean a painter could be just fine, leaving the painting the way it is, the art connoisseur would have interpreted the way they would have wanted to and given the dollars and moved on, but that is exactly how it doesn’t work and that’s what separates the masters from the ordinary mortals and the only thing that these masters do differently with their failures is that they use it as their springboard to propel themselves even higher and farther to work on the next idea- as they use the current failure to touch the eluding success that they pursue! By now you must be wondering, if this is all about failures than why do we not fail that often now a days and why aren’t we able to realise the success as we aspire for? Read on!

The fact of life is that the modern corporate circus is all about risk avoidance, sure enough you want some critical aspects of business to work like that, makes sense- but this has all got to do with technological aspects! The human approach and attitude necessarily needs to be the one that embraces failure, if one wants to taste real success! You see most of our corporate work methods are more based on cherishing success and demeaning and looking down upon failure, so the human mind- being what it is, does what it should- mimic- yes- mimic- because it has seen “X” doing “ABC” to get that result which has the reward attached, so it will just do that so it too can get a chance to get rewarded- sounds familiar- yes, “corporate sales training” is a close resemblance for this! Then why aren’t everyone successful equally- why few fly and others fall, well that is simply because the ones’ who fail, learn, improvise and re-apply their learning- fly, the ones’ who face the wall and are only hanging by the structured corporate gospel, will fall every time they are faced with a negating experience unless they too learn to embrace failure as the first step to reach success!

As organisations become more and more risk averse and want to stay within an allowable band of human ingenuity and creativity- failures are far and few in between and so are the chances to improvise, re-learn and re-apply virgin human thought and that’s why we end up creating newness within what is there- but rarely coming up with something completely new as the earlier pioneers and inventors could! Sure enough, we have a few exceptional minds even now who world on complex problems and are able to come up with something that is path breaking- but again these are those geniuses- who have known to value failure and have always thrived on risking to venture into areas where normally no one would want to- you see, magic and success happens beyond failure and in a zone which is far uncomfortable and alien- a space within the human mind where dreams come alive and ideas take birth through some awesome persistence and application of wisdom!

My final take, seriously, do a retake on the whole concept of failing and failure. Do yourself a favour- just redefine your failure and from there allow the foundation of your success to be built! You will be simply amazed at the new areas that light up, the new pathways that open up and how you begin to see the same age old problems and challenges in a newer and brighter perspective- certainly I am not saying, you will have all the answers to your perplexing problems, but what you will be now armed with will be the right questions that you must ask yourself so that those right questions, bring to you the right answer which align you to the path of your success by digging deep into the learning’s from your failures! If you ever wondered why great things take time, this is one of them, great things and people both take time, for they are required to be forged by the forces of time, people and above all failures that they must experience to bring out the best of what lies hidden within them to serve the greater good of humanity around them even as they go about their lives being ordinary mortals doing some extraordinary service to humanity!

I leave you here, with these thoughts, urging you to embrace your failures and reach your success by building upon the foundation of your learnings through your failures!

Ciao for now, stay wise and stay safe! Will be back soon with another one!
